Hi,

We are participating in the YCT Challenge on the 21st June, and I have some questions regarding the routes.

In general, will the routes, be marked out or will there be some flexibility as to the paths used?

I also have some questions about the route for Scafell Pike.

Firstly, is the start at Wasdale from Wasdale head, or from the car park near the campsite at Brakenclose?

Secondly, at Hollow Stones, which path do we take: round to the left, or to the right via Mickeldore?

Regarding the descent, the supplied literature specifies a descent via Lingmell. Do we actually go up onto Lingmell and then down?

I look forward to your help,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

We are also participating (see you there!) as 'Norfolk Mountain Rescue Team', but don't look for support from us as Norfolk is as flat as a pancake and we are not a Rescue Team!

Regards the route, my understanding is that we meet at the Wasdale Head main car park and go up the main path over Lingmell Gill, walk to the right-hand side of Brown Tongue, left at the Hollow Stones 'Y' junction (avoid path to Mickledore) and walk through Lingmell Col, and bearing right to the summit. We will then return via the same path back to the car park and there is no descent via Lingmell fell itself (not that i know of anyway!).

There will be Marshalls dotted about on the route Cool

What literature have you been supplied as I'm not sure what i have that mentions a descent via Lingmell.

Hope this helps and hope to see you on the 21st!

Good luck

Hi Mark,

Sorry for the slow response - didn't see your message..!

On Ben Nevis, teams will start and finish at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, and will use the Mountain Track (formerly known as the 'Tourist Path') both up and down.

On Scafell Pike, teams will start and finish from the car park known as 'The Green', at Wasdale Head - not from the National Trust car park near the campsite. Teams will climb the footpath from Wasdale Head over the lower side of Lingmel into Lingmel Gill. Ford the gill, then at Hollow Stones split left towards Lingmel Col. From here the path turns south east up and across the summit plateau. Teams will return the same way.

On Snowdon, teams will start at Pen-Y-Pass and most likely will climb the Miners Track to the summit. If conditions are good, then teams may be allowed to opt for the Pyg Track also. From the summit, all teams will descend via the Llanberis Path (next to the railway) into the finish at Llanberis.

The routes will be marked on the Beacon Map Guide sets which each team will recieve when arriving in Fort William. These are Harvey Walkers maps, in A4 size, laminated with route information on the reverse side.

Regards,

Richie..
