QUESTION: The rules state each person must carry a bivvy bag, but you also state you will provide our team with an emergency group shelter (ie, bothy shelter). Surely we don't need both?
ANSWER: Yes - you must carry both.
The bothy shelter we loan you for the challenge is ideal if you need to stop in poor conditions for even a short period of time, and the shelters do get used by quite a few teams.
Your bivvy bag, on it's own, can help you survive the night, but not with any particular level of comfort. However, despite our strict rules regarding teams staying together at all times when on the mountain, teams still split up, and team members still get lost. Unfortunately, if the team leader who has the group shelter is wandering around Hollow Stones, when you slip and injure your ankle on Linmel Col, without your own bivvy bag you will slowly freeze...

QUESTION: Do we need to spend £100's of pounds buying a bivvy bag?
ANSWER: No, usually less than a fiver.
Just the big, orange plastic bag type is fine. Although a bit bulky, this can be used and stowed in place of a thermal sit mat, or simply packed into the bottom of your rucksack.
An example is the Hi-Gear Survival Bag on the link below, for £4.99, but search around if you want a cheaper deal..!
